Amit Shah (born 22 October 1964) is an Indian politician and businessman who has played a significant role in the political landscape of India. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of the two major political parties in India, and has held various positions within the party and the Indian government. Shah's political career is marked by his close association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his instrumental role in expanding the BJP's influence across India.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Amit Shah was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to a Gujarati Hindu family. His father, Anilchandra Shah, was a businessman. Shah completed his schooling in Mehsana and pursued his higher education in biochemistry at CU Shah Science College in Ahmedabad. Despite his academic background in science, Shah was drawn to politics from an early age, influenced by his family's involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist volunteer organization.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Shah's political journey began with his involvement in the student wing of the RSS, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), during his college days. He joined the BJP in 1986 and quickly rose through the ranks, holding various positions within the party. His association with Narendra Modi dates back to the late 1980s when Modi was an RSS pracharak (campaigner) in Gujarat.

Gujarat Politics[edit | edit source]

Amit Shah's political prominence began to rise in Gujarat, where he was elected as an MLA from Sarkhej in four consecutive elections (1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012). During Modi's tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shah held multiple portfolios, including Home, Transport, and Prohibition, among others. His tenure was marked by significant controversies, including allegations of extrajudicial killings, but also by a reputation for efficiency and strong governance.

National Politics[edit | edit source]

In 2014, following Narendra Modi's election as Prime Minister of India, Amit Shah was appointed as the President of the BJP. Under his leadership, the party achieved unprecedented success, expanding its footprint across India by winning a series of state elections and consolidating its position in the 2019 general elections. Shah's strategies and campaigns have been credited with transforming the BJP into a dominant force in Indian politics.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Amit Shah's career has been marred by several controversies, including charges related to alleged fake encounter killings during his tenure as the Minister of State for Home in Gujarat. However, he was acquitted of all charges in 2015.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Amit Shah is married to Sonal Shah, and the couple has a son named Jay Shah, who is also active in politics and business.

Legacy and Influence[edit | edit source]

Amit Shah is considered one of the most powerful and influential politicians in contemporary India. His strategic acumen and ability to mobilize the party machinery have been pivotal in the BJP's electoral victories. His role in shaping the BJP's policies and ideology, as well as his contribution to the party's expansion, are significant aspects of his legacy.
