Amjevita

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Amjevita is a biosimilar medication to adalimumab, which is used to treat various autoimmune diseases. It is produced by Amgen, a leading biotechnology company. Amjevita is designed to mimic the effects of adalimumab, providing similar therapeutic benefits for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and plaque psoriasis.

Development and Approval[edit | edit source]

Amjevita was developed by Amgen as a biosimilar to Humira, a widely used adalimumab product. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Amjevita in September 2016, making it one of the first biosimilars to adalimumab available in the United States. The approval was based on comprehensive data demonstrating that Amjevita is highly similar to Humira in terms of safety, purity, and potency.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Amjevita works by targeting and inhibiting tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in the inflammatory response. By blocking TNFα, Amjevita helps reduce inflammation and other symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases.
