Amgen is an American multinational biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Thousand Oaks, California. One of the world's largest independent biotechnology firms, Amgen was established in 1980 and has since led the industry in the development of novel therapies to treat serious illnesses.

Amgen was founded by George B. Rathmann, a former chemist at 3M, with the goal of harnessing the power of genetic engineering to produce human proteins for therapeutic uses. The company's name, "Amgen", is a portmanteau of the words "applied molecular genetics".
