Amos Binney (October 18, 1803 – February 18, 1847) was an American physician and malacologist. He is best known for his contributions to the study of mollusks and his role in founding the Boston Society of Natural History.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Amos Binney was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a prominent family. He attended Harvard University, where he developed an interest in natural history. After graduating, he pursued a medical degree at the Harvard Medical School, earning his M.D. in 1826.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Binney practiced medicine in Boston. However, his passion for natural history led him to focus on the study of mollusks. He became a leading figure in American malacology, the branch of zoology that deals with the study of mollusks.

Boston Society of Natural History[edit | edit source]

In 1830, Binney was instrumental in founding the Boston Society of Natural History, an organization dedicated to the study and promotion of natural history. He served as its first president and contributed significantly to its collections and publications.

Contributions to Malacology[edit | edit source]

Binney's most notable work in malacology includes his extensive research on land snails. He published several important papers and monographs on the subject, which were highly regarded by his contemporaries. His work laid the foundation for future studies in the field.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Amos Binney married Mary Ann Perkins in 1833, and they had several children. His son, Amos Binney Jr., followed in his footsteps and became a notable figure in natural history and conservation.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Amos Binney died on February 18, 1847, at the age of 43. His contributions to natural history, particularly malacology, have had a lasting impact. The Boston Society of Natural History continued to thrive and eventually became the Museum of Science, Boston.
