Amy Coney Barrett (born January 28, 1972) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was nominated by President Donald Trump and has served since October 27, 2020. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, Barrett was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Barrett was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended St. Mary's Dominican High School and graduated magna cum laude from Rhodes College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. She then attended the University of Notre Dame Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor, graduating first in her class in 1997.

Legal Career[edit | edit source]

After law school, Barrett clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and then for Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court of the United States. Following her clerkships, she worked in private practice and later joined the faculty at Notre Dame Law School, where she taught constitutional law, statutory interpretation, and civil procedure.

Judicial Career[edit | edit source]

In 2017, Barrett was nominated by President Trump to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She was confirmed by the Senate and served on the Seventh Circuit until her appointment to the Supreme Court in 2020.

Supreme Court Nomination[edit | edit source]

Barrett was nominated to the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her nomination was controversial due to its proximity to the 2020 presidential election. She was confirmed by the Senate on October 26, 2020, by a vote of 52-48.

Judicial Philosophy[edit | edit source]

Barrett is considered a conservative jurist and an originalist, meaning she interprets the Constitution as she believes it was understood at the time it was written. Her judicial philosophy is often compared to that of her mentor, Justice Scalia.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Barrett is married to Jesse M. Barrett, a fellow Notre Dame Law School graduate and former federal prosecutor. They have seven children, two of whom were adopted from Haiti.
