Android TV
Android TV is a version of the Android operating system designed for digital media players, set-top boxes, soundbars, and TVs. Developed by Google, it creates an interactive television experience through a 10-foot user interface. Android TV was first announced in June 2014 as a successor to the previously failed Google TV.
Features[edit | edit source]
Android TV integrates with Google Assistant for voice commands and incorporates the Google Play Store, allowing users to download apps and games specifically optimized for the TV. It supports Google Cast, enabling users to cast content from their mobile devices to their TV screens. Android TV also offers personalized content recommendations on the home screen based on user preferences and viewing habits.
Hardware[edit | edit source]
Several manufacturers have adopted Android TV for their devices. Notable examples include the Nvidia Shield TV, which is known for its high performance and gaming capabilities, and various models from Sony, Philips, and Sharp that have Android TV built into their smart TVs. Additionally, standalone set-top boxes and streaming sticks, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box, provide an affordable way to turn any TV with an HDMI port into a smart TV running Android TV.
Development[edit | edit source]
Developers can create applications for Android TV using the Android SDK, which includes tools and APIs specifically designed for TV apps. The platform encourages developers to focus on creating a user-friendly, 10-foot user interface, which is navigable from the couch using a remote control.
Reception[edit | edit source]
Android TV has received mixed reviews. Critics praise its interface and the vast selection of apps available through the Google Play Store. However, some users have reported issues with app compatibility and performance on lower-end hardware. Despite these criticisms, Android TV continues to be a popular choice for manufacturers and consumers looking for a versatile and user-friendly smart TV platform.
