Andy Griffith (June 1, 1926 – July 3, 2012) was an American actor, comedian, television producer, Southern gospel singer, and writer. He was a prominent figure in U.S. television, best known for his roles in the television series The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock.

Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, a small town that was the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry, the setting for The Andy Griffith Show. He developed an interest in acting at an early age and participated in various school plays and community theater productions.

Griffith's career spanned seven decades in music and television. He first gained prominence in the 1950s with his role in the Broadway play No Time for Sergeants, which earned him a Tony Award nomination. His performance in the play led to a contract with Warner Bros., where he starred in several films, including A Face in the Crowd.

In 1960, Griffith starred in The Andy Griffith Show, a sitcom that ran for eight seasons on CBS. The show was a major success and has remained popular in syndication. Griffith's portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor, a wise and patient small-town sheriff, became one of his most iconic roles.

After The Andy Griffith Show, Griffith starred in the legal drama Matlock, which ran for nine seasons. His portrayal of Ben Matlock, a defense attorney known for his Southern drawl and sharp investigative skills, was also well received.

Griffith was married three times and had two children. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and was known for his philanthropy, particularly in his home state of North Carolina. Griffith died in 2012 at the age of 86.
