Angelo Donghia
Angelo Donghia (1935-1985) was an influential interior designer and textile designer known for his distinctive and luxurious style. He was the founder of the design firm Donghia Associates and the Donghia Furniture Company.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Angelo Donghia was born in 1935 in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. He developed an interest in design at a young age, often helping his father, a tailor, with his work. Donghia went on to study at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he graduated in 1959.
Career[edit | edit source]
After graduating from Parsons, Donghia joined the design firm of Yale R. Burge, eventually becoming a partner and renaming the firm Burge-Donghia. He established his own firm, Donghia Associates, in 1968.
Donghia's design style was characterized by a mix of modern and traditional elements, often incorporating luxurious fabrics and finishes. He was known for his ability to create spaces that were both elegant and comfortable, and his work was sought after by a number of high-profile clients, including Ralph Lauren and Diana Ross.
In addition to his interior design work, Donghia was also a successful textile designer. He founded the Donghia Furniture Company in 1978, which produced a range of furniture and textiles that reflected his signature style.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Angelo Donghia's influence on the design world continues to be felt today. His design firm, Donghia Associates, remains a leading force in the industry, and his furniture and textiles are still widely used. The Angelo Donghia Foundation, established after his death, provides scholarships to students in the fields of interior design, architecture, and fashion.
