Ankaferd BloodStopper (ABS) is a hemostatic agent used in the management of bleeding and hemorrhage. It is a product of traditional Turkish folk medicine and is composed of a mixture of plants, including Thymus vulgaris, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Vitis vinifera, Alpinia officinarum, and Urtica dioica.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Ankaferd BloodStopper is a mixture of five different plants. Each of these plants contributes to the overall hemostatic effect of the product.

  • Thymus vulgaris (Thyme): Thyme is known for its antiseptic properties. It also has astringent properties that help in blood clotting.
  • Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice): Licorice has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. It also helps in the formation of a protective layer over the wound, promoting healing.
  • Vitis vinifera (Grapevine): Grapevine has antioxidant properties and also contributes to the astringent effect of the product.
  • Alpinia officinarum (Lesser Galangal): Lesser Galangal has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It also helps in blood clotting.
  • Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle): Stinging Nettle has astringent and hemostatic properties. It also helps in wound healing.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

The exact mechanism of action of Ankaferd BloodStopper is not fully understood. However, it is believed to form an encapsulated protein network that provides focal points for vital red blood cell aggregation. This aggregation then forms a plug that aids in hemostasis.

Clinical Applications[edit | edit source]

Ankaferd BloodStopper has been used in various clinical settings, including dentistry, surgery, and gastroenterology. It has been found to be effective in controlling bleeding in patients with hemophilia and other coagulation disorders. It is also used in the management of epistaxis (nosebleeds) and gingival bleeding (bleeding gums).

Ankaferd BloodStopper is generally considered safe for use. However, as with any medication, it may cause side effects in some individuals. These may include allergic reactions, skin irritation, and temporary discoloration of the skin at the application site.
