Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Written for all ages, it has been considered a children's novel since the mid-20th century. The novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Marilla Cuthbert and Matthew Cuthbert, who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. The story begins with Matthew Cuthbert driving to the train station to pick up an orphan boy. Instead, he finds Anne Shirley, a talkative and imaginative girl. Despite the initial shock, Matthew decides to take her home. Marilla Cuthbert is initially displeased but agrees to let Anne stay temporarily. Over time, Anne's charm and spirit win over the Cuthberts and the townspeople.
Anne's adventures include her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe, her friendship with Diana Barry, and her academic achievements. The novel explores themes of family, friendship, and the importance of imagination.
