Children's literature or juvenile literature includes stories, books, magazines, and poems that are enjoyed by children. Modern children's literature is classified in two different ways: genre or the intended age of the reader.

Children's literature traces its roots back to stories and songs, part of a wider oral tradition, that adults shared with children before publishing existed. The development of early children's literature, before printing was invented, is difficult to trace. Even after printing became widespread, many classic children's tales were originally created for adults and later adapted for a younger audience. Since the fifteenth century, a large quantity of literature, often with a moral or religious message, has been aimed specifically at children. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries became known as the "Golden Age of Children's Literature" as this period included the publication of many books acknowledged today as classics.

Genres and Themes[edit | edit source]

Children's literature can be divided into categories, either according to genre or the intended age of the reader. A literary work can belong to more than one genre at the same time. The main genres in children's literature include picture books, including board books, concept books, and picture storybooks; traditional literature, including fairy tales, fables, and folktales; fiction, including fantasy, realistic fiction, and historical fiction; non-fiction; and biographies. Each of these genres is aimed at a different age group, from very young children to young adults.

Importance[edit | edit source]

Children's literature is important because it provides students with opportunities to respond to literature; it gives students appreciation about their own cultural heritage as well as those of others; it helps to develop emotional intelligence and creativity; it nurtures growth and development of the student's personality and social skills; and it can be used to teach a more comprehensive curriculum including math, science, and social studies. Reading and being read to at an early age not only increases success in the school environment but also increases the rate of literacy for children significantly.

Awards[edit | edit source]

Several awards are dedicated to recognizing excellence in children's literature, including the Newbery Medal, awarded annually by the American Library Association (ALA) for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year; the Caldecott Medal, awarded annually for the most distinguished American picture book for children; and the Carnegie Medal, awarded annually in the United Kingdom. These awards are important in providing a guide to quality children's books.

Challenges and Controversies[edit | edit source]

Children's literature has not been without its challenges and controversies. The inclusion of certain themes, language, and content has sparked debate about what is appropriate for children. Issues such as censorship, the representation of gender, race, and LGBTQ+ themes, and the lack of diversity in children's books are ongoing discussions within the field.
