Antonio Alfonseca is a former professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic. Born on April 16, 1972, in La Romana, Alfonseca is best known for his time as a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). Over his career, he played for several teams, including the Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Alfonseca was signed by the Florida Marlins as an amateur free agent in 1990. He made his MLB debut with the Marlins on June 17, 1997. Notably, Alfonseca possesses a rare physical trait of having six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, a condition known as polydactyly, which has earned him the nickname "El Pulpo" (The Octopus).

Major League Career[edit | edit source]

Throughout his career, Alfonseca was known for his powerful fastball and ability to pitch in crucial late-game situations. His most notable season came in 2000 with the Florida Marlins when he led the National League (NL) in saves with 45, earning him the Rolaids Relief Man Award.

Alfonseca's style of play was characterized by his aggressive approach on the mound, utilizing a mix of fastballs and sliders to challenge hitters. Despite his success, his career was also marked by inconsistency at times, leading to fluctuations in his performance from season to season.
