Aplets & Cotlets[edit | edit source]

Aplets & Cotlets is a popular confectionery brand that specializes in producing fruit and nut-based candies. The company was founded in 1920 by Armen Tertsagian and Mark Balaban, two Armenian immigrants who settled in Cashmere, Washington, United States.

History[edit | edit source]

Aplets & Cotlets have a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. Armen Tertsagian and Mark Balaban, both skilled confectioners, decided to combine their expertise and create a unique candy that showcased the flavors of the Pacific Northwest.

In 1920, they established the Liberty Orchards Company in Cashmere, Washington. The company initially focused on producing apple-based candies, using locally grown apples from the surrounding orchards. The name "Aplets" was chosen to reflect the primary ingredient of the candy.

The success of Aplets candies led Tertsagian and Balaban to expand their product line. In 1928, they introduced "Cotlets," a similar candy made with apricots and walnuts. The name "Cotlets" was derived from the Armenian word "kot," meaning "piece."

Production Process[edit | edit source]

Aplets & Cotlets candies are made using a traditional recipe that has been passed down through generations. The production process begins with the selection of high-quality fruits and nuts. The apples and apricots used in the candies are sourced from local orchards, ensuring freshness and flavor.

Once the fruits are harvested, they are carefully washed, sorted, and processed. The apples and apricots are then cooked with sugar and other natural ingredients to create a thick, fruity paste. This paste is then mixed with chopped walnuts and shaped into small, bite-sized pieces.

The candies are allowed to cool and set before being individually wrapped. The packaging of Aplets & Cotlets candies features the iconic green and white design, which has become synonymous with the brand.

Popularity and Recognition[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Aplets & Cotlets candies have gained a loyal following and have become a beloved treat in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The unique combination of fruit and nuts, along with the use of high-quality ingredients, has contributed to their popularity.

The candies have received numerous accolades and recognition. In 2013, Aplets & Cotlets was awarded the "Best Candy" title by the Seattle Weekly Reader's Poll. The brand has also been featured in various media outlets, including magazines and television shows, further solidifying its reputation.
