Appalachian barren strawberry (w. Fragarioides) is native barrenwort (epimedium sp.) grows 8 to 15 inches high as a compact, spreading ground cover. Strong rhizomes help in erosion control. Bright-green, compound leaves and white, yellow or red flowers in spring. Yellow, bronze or red fall color. Part-sun to shade. Rich, moist soil. Tolerates wet conditions. Good ground cover; may be slow getting established. Zone 3
