Appenzeller Spitzhauben
Appenzeller Spitzhauben
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a breed of chicken originating from the Appenzell region in Switzerland. This breed is known for its distinctive forward-pointing crest, which resembles a bonnet or "spitzhaube" in German, hence the name. The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a hardy and active bird, well-suited to free-range environments.
History[edit | edit source]
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben has a long history dating back to the 16th century. It is believed to have been developed in the Appenzell region of Switzerland, where it was primarily kept for its egg-laying capabilities. The breed was officially recognized in the 19th century and has since become a symbol of Swiss poultry breeding.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Appenzeller Spitzhauben chickens are medium-sized birds with a distinctive V-shaped comb and a forward-pointing crest. They have white earlobes and slate-blue legs. The breed comes in several color varieties, including silver-spangled, gold-spangled, and black. They are known for their excellent foraging abilities and are very active and alert.
Temperament[edit | edit source]
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is known for its lively and curious nature. They are good foragers and do well in free-range environments. However, they can be flighty and are not typically considered a good choice for confinement.
Egg Production[edit | edit source]
This breed is primarily kept for its egg-laying abilities. Hens are good layers of white eggs, producing around 150-180 eggs per year. They are not known for being broody, which means they do not often sit on their eggs to hatch them.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is considered a rare breed outside of Switzerland. Efforts are being made to preserve the breed through various conservation programs and breed clubs.
