Appletiser

Appletiser is a sparkling fruit juice created and originally marketed by the Apple Products Company in Elgin Valley, Western Cape, South Africa. It was first introduced in 1966 and has since become a well-known beverage worldwide. The drink is made from a blend of apple juice concentrate and carbonated water, with no added preservatives or artificial flavours.

History[edit | edit source]

The Apple Products Company was founded in 1965 by Edmond Lombardi. The following year, Lombardi introduced Appletiser to the South African market. The drink quickly gained popularity due to its unique taste and natural ingredients. In 1979, the Coca-Cola Company acquired a majority stake in the Apple Products Company, leading to the global distribution of Appletiser.

Production[edit | edit source]

Appletiser is produced by blending apple juice concentrate with carbonated water. The apple juice concentrate is sourced from various apple varieties, including Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady. The apples are harvested, washed, and crushed to extract the juice. The juice is then concentrated and mixed with carbonated water to create Appletiser.

Varieties[edit | edit source]

There are several varieties of Appletiser available, including:

  • Original Appletiser: This is the original sparkling apple juice drink. It is made from 100% apple juice concentrate and carbonated water.
  • Red Grapetiser: Introduced in 1981, this variant is made from red grape juice concentrate and carbonated water.
  • White Grapetiser: This variant is made from white grape juice concentrate and carbonated water.
  • Peartiser: Introduced in 2008, this variant is made from pear juice concentrate and carbonated water.

Health Aspects[edit | edit source]

Appletiser is often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugary soft drinks. It contains no added sugars, preservatives, or artificial flavours. However, it is high in natural sugars from the fruit juice concentrate, so it should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
