Ardbeg distillery
Ardbeg Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery in Ardbeg, Isle of Islay, Scotland. The distillery has been producing whisky since 1815, and is known for its peaty, smoky character.
History[edit | edit source]
The Ardbeg Distillery was officially established in 1815 by John McDougall, although there is evidence that distilling was taking place on the site as early as 1798. The distillery remained in the McDougall family until 1977, when it was sold to Hiram Walker, a Canadian distiller. The distillery was closed in 1981, but was reopened in 1989 by Glenmorangie plc, who continue to operate it today.
Production[edit | edit source]
The Ardbeg Distillery uses traditional methods to produce its whisky. The water used in the distillation process comes from Loch Uigeadail, which is known for its peaty character. The malted barley used in the production is also heavily peated, giving the whisky its distinctive smoky flavour. The distillery has a production capacity of 1.1 million litres of alcohol per year.
Products[edit | edit source]
The Ardbeg Distillery produces a range of single malt whiskies, including the Ardbeg Ten Years Old, Ardbeg Uigeadail, and Ardbeg Corryvreckan. The distillery also releases limited edition whiskies, such as the Ardbeg Supernova and Ardbeg Perpetuum.
Awards[edit | edit source]
The Ardbeg Distillery has received numerous awards for its whiskies. In 2008, the Ardbeg Ten Years Old was named World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible. The distillery itself was named Distillery of the Year by the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2010.
