Arnsburger[edit | edit source]

Arnsburger grapes on the vine

Arnsburger is a white grape variety used primarily in the production of white wine. It was developed in the mid-20th century in Germany and is known for its ability to produce wines with a delicate aroma and crisp acidity. The grape is a cross between two clones of the Riesling variety, making it a member of the Vitis vinifera species.

History[edit | edit source]

The Arnsburger grape was created in 1939 by Heinrich Birk at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in the Rheingau region of Germany. It was officially released for cultivation in 1984. The grape was named after the Arnsburg Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery located near the town of Lich in Hesse, Germany.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Arnsburger vines are known for their vigorous growth and high yield potential. The grapes are small to medium-sized with a greenish-yellow skin. They ripen relatively early in the growing season, which makes them suitable for cooler climates. The wines produced from Arnsburger grapes are typically light-bodied with floral and fruity notes, often reminiscent of green apple, citrus, and white peach.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Arnsburger is primarily grown in Germany, although it has also been planted in other wine-producing countries such as New Zealand and South Africa. The grape thrives in well-drained soils and requires careful canopy management to prevent excessive vigor and ensure optimal ripening. It is often used in blends to add acidity and aromatic complexity to the wine.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Arnsburger grapes are usually dry or off-dry, with a refreshing acidity that makes them suitable for pairing with a variety of foods. They are often enjoyed as young wines, although some producers may choose to age them in oak barrels to add complexity and depth.
