Arvid Järnefelt was born in Pietari, Russian Empire, to Gustaf Järnefelt and Elisabeth Järnefelt. He was part of a notable family, with his siblings including the composer Armas Järnefelt and the painter Eero Järnefelt. Arvid studied law at the University of Helsinki, where he graduated in 1885.
