Asbach Uralt is a brand of German brandy that has been produced since 1892. It is known for its smooth and full-bodied flavor, making it a popular choice among brandy enthusiasts.

History[edit | edit source]

Asbach Uralt was first introduced in 1892 by Hugo Asbach, a distiller from Rüdesheim, Germany. Hugo Asbach was passionate about creating a high-quality brandy that would rival the best French cognacs. He developed a unique distillation process that involved double distillation and aging in small Limousin oak casks.

Over the years, Asbach Uralt gained a reputation for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship. It became a favorite among connoisseurs and was often enjoyed as a digestif after meals.

Production[edit | edit source]

Asbach Uralt is made from carefully selected wines sourced from different grape varieties, primarily from the Rhine region in Germany. The wines are distilled twice in copper pot stills to create a pure and flavorful distillate.

After distillation, the brandy is aged in small Limousin oak casks for a minimum of three years. This aging process allows the brandy to develop its smooth and complex character. Asbach also produces older expressions, such as the Asbach 8 Year Old and Asbach 15 Year Old, which are aged for longer periods to enhance their richness and depth of flavor.

Tasting Notes[edit | edit source]

Asbach Uralt has a rich amber color and a smooth, velvety texture. On the nose, it offers aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, and oak. The palate is characterized by flavors of caramel, chocolate, and a hint of spice. The finish is long and warming, leaving a lingering sweetness on the palate.

Serving Suggestions[edit | edit source]

Asbach Uralt is often enjoyed neat or on the rocks, allowing its complex flavors to be fully appreciated. It can also be used as a base for cocktails, adding depth and richness to classic recipes such as the Old Fashioned or the Sidecar.
