The assassination of Benazir Bhutto occurred on December 27, 2007, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto, a former Prime Minister of Pakistan and leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was killed in a combined shooting and bombing attack while leaving a political rally at Liaquat National Bagh.

Background[edit | edit source]

Benazir Bhutto was a prominent Pakistani politician and the first woman to head a democratic government in a majority Muslim nation. She served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. Her return to Pakistan in 2007 marked a significant moment in the country's political landscape, as she sought to participate in the upcoming general elections.

The Assassination[edit | edit source]

On December 27, 2007, Bhutto addressed a rally of PPP supporters in Rawalpindi. As she left the rally in a bulletproof vehicle, she stood up through the sunroof to wave to the crowd. At this moment, a gunman fired shots at her, and a suicide bomber detonated explosives near her vehicle. Bhutto was critically injured and was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigation[edit | edit source]

The assassination led to widespread chaos and violence across Pakistan. Initial investigations were conducted by Pakistani authorities, but the circumstances surrounding her death were controversial and led to various conspiracy theories. In 2010, the United Nations released a report criticizing the Pakistani government's handling of the investigation and security arrangements.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Bhutto's assassination had a profound impact on Pakistan's political scene. It led to a wave of violence and unrest, and the general elections were postponed. Her death was a significant blow to the PPP, which she had led for many years. The assassination also highlighted the ongoing issues of extremism and political instability in Pakistan.
