Attawapiskat First Nation is a First Nations band government located in the Kenora District in northern Ontario, Canada. The community is situated on the western shore of James Bay, at the mouth of the Attawapiskat River. The name "Attawapiskat" is derived from the Cree language term for "people of the parting of the rocks."

History[edit | edit source]

The Attawapiskat First Nation has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The community is part of the larger Cree cultural and linguistic group. Traditionally, the people of Attawapiskat were nomadic, relying on hunting, fishing, and trapping for their livelihood. European contact in the 17th century brought significant changes, including the establishment of the fur trade.

Governance[edit | edit source]

The Attawapiskat First Nation is governed by a Chief and Council, elected by the community members. The band government is responsible for local administration, including health services, education, and infrastructure. The community is part of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, a political organization representing 49 First Nations in northern Ontario.

However, economic opportunities remain limited, and the community faces significant challenges related to poverty and unemployment.

Social Issues[edit | edit source]

Attawapiskat has been the focus of national and international attention due to various social issues, including housing shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and health crises.
