Autistica

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Autistica is a UK-based charity that funds and campaigns for research into the causes and effects of autism. It was founded in 2004 by Dame Stephanie Shirley, who was motivated by her own experiences as a parent of a child with autism. Autistica's mission is to improve the lives of all people affected by autism by funding and promoting groundbreaking research, improving understanding of autism and advancing new therapies and interventions.

History[edit | edit source]

Autistica was originally established as the Autism Research Centre in 2004. In 2008, it was renamed Autistica following a merger with the Autism Research Trust. The charity has since grown to become the UK's leading autism research charity, having raised over £10 million for autism research.

Research[edit | edit source]

Autistica funds research into a wide range of areas related to autism, including its causes, the development of new therapies and interventions, and the improvement of services for people with autism. The charity has a particular focus on research that can make a real difference to the lives of people with autism and their families.

Campaigns[edit | edit source]

In addition to funding research, Autistica also campaigns to raise awareness of autism and to improve the lives of people with autism. The charity's campaigns have included efforts to improve the diagnosis of autism, to increase understanding of the condition, and to ensure that people with autism have access to the support and services they need.
