Aztreonam/avibactam

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Aztreonam/avibactam is a combination of two antibiotics, aztreonam and avibactam, used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. This combination is particularly effective against multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Composition[edit | edit source]

The combination consists of aztreonam, a monobactam antibiotic, and avibactam, a non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor. Aztreonam works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to cell death, while avibactam protects aztreonam from degradation by certain β-lactamases, enzymes produced by bacteria that can break down antibiotics and render them ineffective.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Aztreonam/avibactam is used to treat a variety of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, and skin and skin structure infections. It is also used in the treatment of infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and certain Enterobacteriaceae.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of aztreonam/avibactam include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. Serious side effects can include allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and liver problems.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Aztreonam/avibactam can interact with other medications, including other antibiotics, anticoagulants, and probenecid. It is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using aztreonam/avibactam, individuals should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of allergy to any antibiotics, kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also important to inform the healthcare provider if the individual is pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
