Aztreonam lysine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Aztreonam Lysine is an antibiotic medication used primarily for the treatment of pulmonary infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients with cystic fibrosis. It is a synthetic monobactam, which is a type of beta-lactam antibiotic that is structurally different from other types of beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Aztreonam Lysine is a bactericidal agent that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to the death of the bacteria. It is specifically active against Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Aztreonam Lysine is administered via inhalation, allowing for direct delivery of the antibiotic to the lungs, where Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis patients are typically located. The use of inhaled aztreonam lysine has been shown to improve lung function and reduce the frequency of pulmonary exacerbations in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of aztreonam lysine include cough, nasal congestion, wheezing, sore throat, and fever. Less common but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, and chest pain.
