British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)[edit | edit source]
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a public service broadcaster, headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, United Kingdom. It is the world's oldest national broadcaster and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees, with over 22,000 staff in total, of whom more than 16,000 are in public sector broadcasting.
History[edit | edit source]
The BBC was established under a Royal Charter and operates under its Agreement with the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The BBC's work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee which is charged to all British households, companies, and organisations using any type of equipment to receive or record live television broadcasts and iPlayer catch-up.
The BBC was founded on 18 October 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company Ltd by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including Marconi Company. It became the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1927, under the management of John Reith, who set the tone for the corporation with his guiding principles of "inform, educate, entertain".
