BEAMnrc
BEAMnrc is a Monte Carlo simulation software package for the modelling of particle transport through three-dimensional structures. It is primarily used in the field of medical physics to simulate the passage of electrons and photons through various materials and structures, such as radiotherapy treatment heads.
Overview[edit | edit source]
BEAMnrc is based on the EGSnrc code system, which is a general-purpose package for the Monte Carlo simulation of the coupled transport of electrons and photons in an arbitrary geometry. BEAMnrc extends the capabilities of EGSnrc by adding components and routines specifically designed for the simulation of radiotherapy treatment units.
Applications[edit | edit source]
The primary application of BEAMnrc is in the field of radiation therapy, where it is used to model the transport of radiation through treatment heads. This allows for the accurate calculation of dose distributions in patients, which is crucial for effective treatment planning. BEAMnrc can also be used in other areas of medical physics, such as radiation protection and dosimetry.
Features[edit | edit source]
BEAMnrc includes a number of features that make it a powerful tool for the simulation of radiation transport. These include:
- A wide range of components for modelling different parts of a treatment head, such as ion chambers, multileaf collimators, and wedges.
- The ability to model the transport of both electrons and photons.
- The ability to simulate complex geometries.
- The ability to calculate dose distributions in three dimensions.
