BMC Journals[edit | edit source]

BMC Journals, originally known as BioMed Central, is a prominent publisher of open access, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Established in 2000, BMC has been a pioneer in the open access movement, providing free and unrestricted access to research articles across a wide range of disciplines, particularly in the fields of biology and medicine.

History[edit | edit source]

BMC was founded by Vitek Tracz, a visionary in scientific publishing, with the aim of making scientific research freely accessible to everyone. The first journal, BMC Biology, was launched in 2000, and since then, the portfolio has expanded to include over 300 journals covering various scientific disciplines.

In 2008, BMC was acquired by Springer Science+Business Media, which later became part of Springer Nature in 2015. Despite these changes in ownership, BMC has maintained its commitment to open access publishing.

Open Access Model[edit | edit source]

BMC Journals operate under the open access model, which means that all research articles are freely available online without subscription fees. This model is supported by article processing charges (APCs) paid by authors or their institutions. The open access model promotes wider dissemination and accessibility of research findings, facilitating greater collaboration and innovation in the scientific community.

Journal Portfolio[edit | edit source]

BMC publishes a wide array of journals, including flagship titles such as BMC Medicine, BMC Biology, and BMC Genomics. Each journal focuses on a specific area of research, providing a platform for scientists to publish their findings and engage with the global research community.

BMC journals are known for their rigorous peer-review process, ensuring the quality and integrity of published research. The editorial boards consist of leading experts in their respective fields, who oversee the review process and maintain high standards of scientific excellence.

Impact and Influence[edit | edit source]

BMC Journals have had a significant impact on the scientific publishing landscape. By championing open access, BMC has influenced other publishers to adopt similar models, contributing to the broader movement towards open science. The accessibility of BMC articles has facilitated knowledge sharing and collaboration across disciplines and geographical boundaries.

BMC journals are indexed in major databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, enhancing the visibility and impact of the research they publish.
