Overview[edit | edit source]

BMJ Open was launched in 2011 as part of the BMJ's commitment to open science. The journal publishes original research across all medical disciplines, as well as protocols, review articles, and data papers. It operates a peer review process, with articles being reviewed by at least two independent experts in the field.

Open Access[edit | edit source]

As an open access journal, all articles published in BMJ Open are freely available to read, download, and share. This is in line with the Budapest Open Access Initiative's definition of open access, which states that users should be able to "read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles".

Editorial Policies[edit | edit source]

BMJ Open adheres to the highest standards of editorial ethics. The journal follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations for the conduct, reporting, editing, and publication of scholarly work in medical journals.

Impact Factor[edit | edit source]

The impact factor of BMJ Open is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. As of 2020, the journal's impact factor is 2.496.
