BMP15

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

BMP15 or Bone Morphogenetic Protein 15 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP15 gene. It is a member of the TGF-β superfamily, which is involved in the development of the ovary and the regulation of folliculogenesis.

Function[edit | edit source]

BMP15 is an oocyte-derived growth factor that controls the development and function of granulosa cells in the mammalian ovary. It is essential for female fertility, as mutations in the BMP15 gene can lead to premature ovarian failure (POF) and ovarian dysgenesis.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Mutations in the BMP15 gene have been associated with ovarian dysgenesis 2, a condition that causes infertility in women. In addition, BMP15 mutations have been linked to hypergonadotropic ovarian failure, a condition characterized by a lack of ovulation and early menopause.
