Bachelor of Arts
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A. or A.B., from the Latin baccalaureus artium or artium baccalaureus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course or program in the arts or, in some cases, other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. A Bachelor of Arts degree course is generally completed in three or four years, depending on the country and institution.
Degree structure[edit | edit source]
The structure of the Bachelor of Arts degree varies from institution to institution, but generally requires a student to take a majority of their courses in the arts, namely fields such as history, literature, languages, philosophy, and fine arts. Some universities also require students to take a certain number of courses in science or mathematics to ensure a well-rounded education.
Students are typically required to choose a major at the end of their first year or the beginning of their second year, which will determine the focus of their academic studies for the remainder of their degree.
Educational goals[edit | edit source]
The Bachelor of Arts degree is intended to provide students with a broad knowledge of the wider world (e.g., science, culture, and society) in addition to in-depth study in a specific area of interest. A Bachelor of Arts degree fosters intellectual discipline, creativity, and critical thinking skills, which are highly valued in a variety of careers.
