Bali Jatra (literally "Voyage to Bali") is one of the largest fairs organized in the city of Cuttack, in the state of Odisha, India. This annual event is celebrated to mark the day when ancient Odia mariners would set sail to distant lands like Bali, as well as other Southeast Asian islands, for trade and cultural expansion. The festival is held on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, which typically falls in November. Bali Jatra directly translates to "A Voyage to Bali," and it commemorates the rich maritime history of Odisha, showcasing the state's age-old tradition of overseas commerce that dates back to the early centuries of the common era.

History

The history of Bali Jatra is deeply rooted in Odisha's maritime past, where the Sadhabas (ancient sea traders) would embark on perilous voyages to the islands of Southeast Asia, including Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, among others. These traders played a crucial role in the spread of Indian culture, particularly the Hindu and Buddhist religions, to these regions. The festival not only celebrates the adventurous spirit of these traders but also honors their significant contribution to the establishment of Indian colonies in Southeast Asia.

Celebrations

During Bali Jatra, the banks of the Mahanadi River near Cuttack are transformed into a bustling fairground. The festival features hundreds of stalls selling a variety of goods, from traditional Odia delicacies to handicrafts. One of the highlights of Bali Jatra is the launching of miniature boats, made of banana stems and paper, which are set afloat on the river. This act symbolizes the departure of the ancient mariners and is a key ritual of the festival.

Cultural programs, including music, dance, and theatrical performances, add to the festive atmosphere. Traditional Odia art forms, such as Pattachitra painting and Palm leaf engravings, are prominently displayed.
