Bar-back

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bar-back is a term used in the bartending industry to refer to a type of bar staff who supports the bartender in various ways. The role of a bar-back, also known as a runner, bar aide, or bartender's assistant, is crucial in maintaining the smooth operation of the bar.

Duties and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The primary duties of a bar-back include restocking the bar's supplies, cleaning glasses and bar utensils, and preparing certain elements for cocktails, such as cutting fruit for garnishes. They may also be responsible for changing kegs, refilling ice bins, and ensuring that the bartender has all the necessary tools and ingredients to serve customers efficiently.

Skills and Qualifications[edit | edit source]

Bar-backs must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They should also have good communication skills to effectively work with the rest of the bar staff. While no formal education is required for this role, previous experience in a bar or restaurant can be beneficial. Some establishments may require bar-backs to be of legal drinking age.

Career Progression[edit | edit source]

Working as a bar-back is often seen as a stepping stone to becoming a bartender. Many bartenders start their careers as bar-backs to learn the ropes of the industry, understand the dynamics of a bar, and hone their skills.
