Bar Kokhba refuge caves are a series of caves in Israel that were used as hideouts by the Jewish rebels during the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Roman Empire in 132-136 CE. These caves are located primarily in the Judean Desert and the Judean Hills.

History[edit | edit source]

The Bar Kokhba revolt, led by Simon Bar Kokhba, was the third major rebellion by the Jews of Judea against Roman rule. The revolt was a response to the oppressive measures imposed by the Roman authorities, including the banning of circumcision and the establishment of a Roman colony, Aelia Capitolina, on the ruins of Jerusalem.

Discovery[edit | edit source]

The Bar Kokhba refuge caves were discovered in the 20th century by Israeli archaeologists. These caves provided crucial evidence about the life and struggles of the Jewish rebels. The caves contained various artifacts, including letters written by Bar Kokhba himself, weapons, and everyday items.
