Barbara Moore (vegetarian activist)
Barbara Moore (December 22, 1903 – May 14, 1977) was a prominent British vegetarian activist and long-distance walker who gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for her extensive walks in the United Kingdom and the United States. Moore's advocacy for vegetarianism and her feats of endurance brought significant attention to the vegetarian movement during her lifetime.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Barbara Moore was born in Russia and later moved to the United Kingdom. Details about her early life are sparse, but it is known that she was educated as an engineer. Moore developed an interest in dietetics and nutrition, which eventually led her to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle.
Vegetarian Advocacy[edit | edit source]
Moore was a staunch advocate for vegetarianism, which she believed was the key to long life and good health. She was involved with several vegetarian organizations and often spoke at events to promote the benefits of a meat-free diet. Moore's approach to vegetarianism was holistic, incorporating aspects of physical fitness, mental health, and spirituality.
Long-Distance Walking[edit | edit source]
Barbara Moore is perhaps best known for her remarkable long-distance walks. In 1959, at the age of 55, she walked from John o' Groats to Land's End, covering a distance of over 1,200 miles. This walk was widely covered by the media and served to highlight her physical fitness and the perceived benefits of a vegetarian diet.
In 1960, Moore undertook another significant challenge by walking across the United States, from San Francisco to New York City, a journey of approximately 3,000 miles. During this walk, she maintained a strict vegetarian diet, further promoting her message of health and endurance through vegetarianism.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Barbara Moore continued to be active in the vegetarian movement until her death in 1977. She left behind a legacy of dedication to health, fitness, and the promotion of vegetarianism. Moore's walks and her advocacy work helped to raise awareness of vegetarianism and inspired many to consider the health and ethical implications of their dietary choices.
