San Francisco is a city located in the U.S. state of California. It is the fourth most populous city in the state and the 16th most populous in the United States. Known for its cool summers, fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of architecture, and landmarks, San Francisco is a major tourist destination and has a high standard of living.

San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776, when colonists from Spain established Mission San Francisco de Asís, the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco. The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid growth, making it the largest city on the West Coast at the time.

San Francisco is located on the West Coast of the United States at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula and includes significant stretches of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay within its boundaries.
