Barend Mons

Barend Mons is a Dutch molecular biologist and bioinformatician known for his contributions to the field of data sciences in healthcare and biomedical research. He is the co-founder of the FAIR data principles, which aim to make scientific data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Mons was born in Netherlands. He completed his bachelor's and master's in Biology from the University of Amsterdam. He later pursued his PhD in Molecular Biology from the same university.

Career[edit]

After completing his PhD, Mons worked as a researcher in various institutions including the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute. His research primarily focused on the application of computational biology and bioinformatics in understanding genetic diseases and cancer.

In 2005, Mons founded the Biosemantics group, a research group dedicated to the development of semantic technologies for the life sciences. He is also the co-founder of the GO FAIR initiative, an international initiative aimed at implementing the FAIR data principles in scientific research.
