History[edit | edit source]

The Barnett Hospital and Nursing School was founded by Dr. Elijah H. Barnett, a prominent African-American physician in Jacksonville. The hospital was established in 1910 and the nursing school was added in 1912. The institution was one of the few medical facilities in the region that provided healthcare services to the African-American community during the era of segregation.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The hospital was equipped with modern medical facilities for its time. It had a capacity of 50 beds and provided a range of medical services including surgery, obstetrics, and general medicine. The nursing school offered a three-year program that trained nurses in various medical disciplines. The graduates of the school were highly sought after and many of them went on to have successful careers in the healthcare industry.
