Barnett Rosenberg was an American chemist known for his groundbreaking work in the field of cancer research. Born on June 16, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, Rosenberg made significant contributions to the development of chemotherapy drugs.

Rosenberg earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1948. He went on to complete his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Michigan in 1952.

In the early 1960s, Barnett Rosenberg, along with his colleagues, made a serendipitous discovery while conducting experiments with platinum compounds. They found that certain platinum-containing compounds inhibited cell division in Escherichia coli bacteria. This discovery laid the foundation for the development of the widely used chemotherapy drug, cisplatin.

Rosenberg's work on cisplatin revolutionized cancer treatment and led to the development of other platinum-based chemotherapy drugs. His research significantly improved the survival rates of cancer patients worldwide.
