History

Bartow County was created on December 3, 1832, originally as Cass County, named after General Lewis Cass. In 1861, the county was renamed in honor of Francis S. Bartow, a Confederate officer who was the first brigade commander to die in combat during the American Civil War.

The county has a rich history, with significant Native American heritage, particularly from the Cherokee people. The Etowah Indian Mounds, a major archaeological site, is located in Bartow County and provides insight into the Mississippian culture that thrived in the area before European contact.
