Barugo, Leyte
Barugo, Leyte is a municipality in the province of Leyte, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. It is situated on the northern coast of the island of Leyte, and is bordered by the municipalities of Carigara and San Miguel to the north, Tunga and Alangalang to the south, Jaro to the east, and the Camotes Sea to the west.

Barugo was established by the Spanish Empire in 1784, during the period of Spanish colonization of the Philippines. The town was originally named "Barugo" after a type of grass that grew abundantly in the area. During the Philippine Revolution, Barugo was one of the towns that rose up against Spanish rule.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Barugo covers a total land area of 84.62 square kilometers. The terrain is generally flat with some hilly areas, and the climate is classified as tropical rainforest. The municipality is divided into 37 barangays, which are the smallest administrative division in the Philippines.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Barugo is primarily based on agriculture, with rice, corn, and coconut as the main crops. Fishing is also a significant source of livelihood due to the town's coastal location. In recent years, the local government has been promoting tourism as a potential source of income and employment.

Barugo is known for its annual fiesta in honor of its patron saint, Saint James the Greater. The event features a variety of cultural activities, including a parade, a beauty pageant, and a traditional dance competition.
