Batan (stone) is a traditional stone tool used primarily in the Indian subcontinent and South America for grinding and crushing spices, herbs, and grains. This ancient kitchen utensil, also known as Sil Batta in India, consists of two parts: the flat or slightly concave stone base known as the Batan and the smaller stone used to crush the items against the base, known as the Sil.
