Bates

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Bates method is a method that was developed by William Horatio Bates, an American ophthalmologist, to improve eyesight. Bates believed that poor eyesight could be corrected through relaxation techniques and exercises, without the use of glasses or surgery. However, his method has been widely criticized and is not supported by mainstream ophthalmology.

History[edit | edit source]

The Bates method was developed in the early 20th century by William Horatio Bates, an American ophthalmologist. Bates believed that poor eyesight was caused by strain and tension in the eyes, and that this could be corrected through relaxation techniques and exercises. He published his ideas in a book called Perfect Sight Without Glasses in 1920.

Techniques[edit | edit source]

The Bates method involves a series of exercises and techniques designed to relax the eyes and improve eyesight. These include:

  • Palming: This involves covering the eyes with the palms of the hands to block out all light and allow the eyes to relax.
  • Swinging: This involves moving the eyes from side to side in a swinging motion to improve flexibility and movement.
  • Sunning: This involves exposing the eyes to sunlight (with the eyes closed) to stimulate the eyes and improve vision.

Criticism and controversy[edit | edit source]

The Bates method has been widely criticized by mainstream ophthalmology. Many experts argue that there is no scientific evidence to support Bates' theories, and that his techniques can be potentially harmful. The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Optometric Association have both issued statements warning against the use of the Bates method.
