Beacon (apple)
Beacon is a technology developed by Apple Inc., designed to enhance location-based services and functionalities in iOS devices. The technology uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) proximity sensing to transmit a universally unique identifier that can be picked up by compatible devices and software. This identifier, along with other data, can be used to determine the device's physical location, track customers, or trigger location-based actions on the device.

The Beacon technology was first introduced by Apple Inc. at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2013. It was initially incorporated into the iOS 7 operating system and has since been integrated into all subsequent versions of iOS.
Functionality[edit | edit source]
Beacon uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to broadcast signals that can be detected by compatible devices within its range. The technology can determine when a device is near or far from a Beacon, allowing for a range of location-based interactions.
For example, a Beacon can be used in a retail store to provide customers with product information when they are near a particular item. It can also be used in museums to provide visitors with information about exhibits as they move through the building.

To implement Beacon, a developer must first register their iOS device with Apple's iBeacon service. Once registered, the device can start broadcasting its unique identifier to other devices within its range.
The Beacon technology is not limited to iOS devices. It can also be implemented on other platforms such as Android and Windows, provided they support BLE and can detect the Beacon's broadcast signals.

Despite its potential, Beacon has faced criticism for its potential to invade privacy. Since the technology can track a device's location, it can potentially be used to monitor individuals without their consent. However, Apple has implemented measures to prevent this, such as requiring apps to request permission before accessing a device's location data.
