iOS 7 is the seventh major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc., succeeding iOS 6. It was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2013, and was released on September 18, 2013. iOS 7 introduced a completely redesigned user interface, a design credited to a team led by Apple’s then senior vice president of Design, Jony Ive. The new design was intended to make the interface cleaner and more intuitive, featuring a flat graphic design and moving away from skeuomorphism, which mimicked real-world textures and objects in digital form.

Features[edit | edit source]

iOS 7 introduced numerous significant changes to the operating system. Among the most notable were:

  • Control Center: By swiping up from the bottom of the screen, users could now access a panel with toggles for airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and more, as well as shortcuts to the camera, calculator, and flashlight.
  • Notification Center: The Notification Center was redesigned and now included a "Today" view showing the day's events, weather, and frequently accessed locations.
  • Multitasking: The multitasking interface was redesigned to include previews of open applications instead of just icons, allowing users to switch between apps more intuitively.
  • AirDrop: A new feature for sharing files directly between iOS devices over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Siri: The voice assistant received a visual overhaul and new male and female voices, along with new capabilities such as controlling device settings and searching more sources, including Twitter and Wikipedia.
  • App Store: The App Store received updates including automatic app updates and a new "Near Me" tab showcasing apps popular in the user's geographic region.
  • Camera and Photos: The Camera app was updated with new shooting formats, such as square, and filters. The Photos app introduced a new organization system based on time and location, known as "Moments".

Design[edit | edit source]

The design of iOS 7 marked a significant departure from previous versions. The interface abandoned the skeuomorphic design elements of previous iOS versions in favor of a flatter, more colorful look. This change sparked widespread discussion and debate within the design and tech communities about the direction of mobile operating system design.

Compatibility[edit | edit source]

iOS 7 was compatible with the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and later, and the 5th generation iPod touch and later. However, not all features were available on all devices, with certain features requiring more recent hardware.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The reception to iOS 7 was mixed. While many praised its bold redesign and new features, others criticized it for its departure from the familiar iOS look and feel, and some users reported experiencing motion sickness due to the new animations and transitions. Despite the mixed reviews, iOS 7 was quickly adopted by a significant portion of the iOS user base.

Impact[edit | edit source]

iOS 7's release represented a significant shift in the design philosophy at Apple, influencing not only future versions of iOS but also the design of other Apple products and software. It set a new standard for the aesthetic of mobile operating systems, with many other platforms adopting similar flat design principles in the following years.
