Becker nevus
= = Becker Nevus ==
Becker nevus, also known as Becker's melanosis, is a rare skin disorder characterized by a hyperpigmented patch of skin, often with increased hair growth. It typically appears during adolescence and is more common in males.
Clinical Presentation[edit | edit source]
Becker nevus usually presents as a unilateral, irregularly shaped, hyperpigmented patch. The lesion often appears on the upper trunk or shoulder, but it can occur on other parts of the body. Over time, the affected area may develop hypertrichosis, or increased hair growth, which is a distinguishing feature of this condition.
Pathophysiology[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of Becker nevus is not well understood, but it is believed to be a result of a localized increase in androgen receptors in the skin. This may explain the increased hair growth and the typical onset during puberty, a time of increased androgen activity.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of Becker nevus is primarily clinical, based on the characteristic appearance of the lesion. A skin biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions, but it is not usually necessary.
Differential Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Conditions that may be considered in the differential diagnosis of Becker nevus include:
Management[edit | edit source]
Becker nevus is a benign condition and does not require treatment. However, if the appearance of the nevus is of cosmetic concern, options such as laser therapy may be considered to reduce pigmentation and hair growth.
Epidemiology[edit | edit source]
Becker nevus is more common in males than females, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 5:1. It typically appears during adolescence, although cases have been reported in younger children and adults.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for individuals with Becker nevus is excellent, as it is a benign condition with no risk of malignant transformation. The lesion may become more prominent over time, but it does not pose any health risks.
