Behavioural problems
Behavioural Problems are a category of psychological disorders that involve persistent, maladaptive behaviours and patterns that cause significant personal, social, and occupational problems for the individual. These problems can manifest in various forms such as ADHD, ODD, conduct disorder, and antisocial personality disorder among others.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Behavioural problems, also known as disruptive behavioural disorders, are the most common reasons that parents are told to take their kids for mental health assessments and treatment. Behavioural problems are also common in adults. If left untreated in childhood, these disorders can negatively affect a person's ability to hold a job and maintain relationships.
Types of Behavioural Problems[edit | edit source]
There are several types of behavioural problems, including:
- ADHD: This disorder typically involves inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
- ODD: This involves a pattern of defiant, disobedient, and hostile behaviour towards authority figures.
- Conduct Disorder: This involves a pattern of violating the basic rights of others or major societal norms or rules.
- Antisocial Personality Disorder: This involves a pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of behavioural problems is not known, but it is believed that a combination of genetics, environmental factors, and brain function are involved. Factors that may increase the risk of developing behavioural problems include:
- Family history of mental health disorders
- Physical or sexual abuse
- Exposure to violence
- Lack of parental supervision or involvement
- Substance abuse
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment of behavioural problems typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, behaviour modification techniques, and medication. The type of treatment will depend on the specific disorder and the individual's specific symptoms.
