Belgian Red Cross
Belgian Red Cross is a non-profit organization that is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It was established in Belgium in 1864, following the principles set out by Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross movement.
History[edit | edit source]
The Belgian Red Cross was founded on February 4, 1864, making it one of the oldest Red Cross organizations in the world. It was established in response to the suffering witnessed during the Battle of Solferino in 1859. The organization was officially recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1914.
Structure and Organization[edit | edit source]
The Belgian Red Cross is divided into two autonomous entities: the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders and the Belgian Red Cross-Francophone. Each entity has its own president and board of directors, and they operate independently of each other, but both are members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Activities[edit | edit source]
The Belgian Red Cross provides a wide range of services, including disaster relief, first aid training, blood donation services, and support for refugees and asylum seekers. It also plays a key role in promoting and implementing International Humanitarian Law in Belgium.
International Cooperation[edit | edit source]
The Belgian Red Cross works closely with other Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world, particularly in times of crisis or disaster. It also collaborates with international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union to provide humanitarian aid and support.
