Benzylaminopurine

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Benzylaminopurine (BAP) is a first-generation synthetic cytokinin that promotes cell division and influences plant growth and development. It is widely used in horticulture and tissue culture to establish plant cell cultures and to stimulate plant growth.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Benzylaminopurine is a derivative of adenine, a purine base that is a fundamental component of DNA and RNA. It has a molecular formula of C12H11N5 and a molecular weight of 225.25 g/mol. The compound is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and most organic solvents.

Mode of Action[edit | edit source]

Benzylaminopurine functions by mimicking the action of natural plant hormones known as cytokinins. These hormones regulate various aspects of plant growth and development, including cell division, bud formation, and leaf senescence. By applying benzylaminopurine, growers can manipulate these processes to enhance plant growth and productivity.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Benzylaminopurine is used in a variety of agricultural and horticultural applications. It is commonly used in tissue culture to stimulate the formation of callus, a mass of undifferentiated plant cells that can be induced to form a new plant. It is also used to promote bud formation in ornamental plants and to delay leaf senescence in cut flowers.

In agriculture, benzylaminopurine is used to enhance crop yield by promoting cell division and growth. It is also used to improve fruit set and to delay fruit senescence, thereby extending the shelf life of harvested produce.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Benzylaminopurine is generally considered safe for use in agriculture and horticulture. However, like all plant growth regulators, it should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to avoid potential phytotoxicity.
