Bernard Lama (born 7 April 1963) is a retired French footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He is most noted for his time at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and the French national team, with which he won the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Bernard Lama was born in Cayenne, French Guiana. He began his professional football career with Lille in 1981, where he played until 1989. During his time at Lille, Lama established himself as a promising goalkeeper, known for his reflexes and shot-stopping abilities.

Club Career[edit | edit source]

After leaving Lille, Lama had a brief stint with RC Lens before moving to Brest. His performances at Brest earned him a move to Paris Saint-Germain in 1992, where he would enjoy the most successful period of his career. At PSG, Lama won several domestic titles, including the Ligue 1 title in the 1993-1994 season and the Coupe de France in 1993 and 1995. He also played a key role in PSG's run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League during the 1994-1995 season.

In 1997, Lama had a brief loan spell at West Ham United in the Premier League, becoming one of the first French players to play in the English top flight. He returned to PSG after his loan and continued to play for the club until 2000.

Bernard Lama earned his first cap for the France national football team in 1993. He was part of the French squad that competed in the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, although France failed to qualify for the tournament. Lama's most significant achievement came in 1998 when he was a member of the French team that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Although he was the second-choice goalkeeper behind Fabien Barthez during the tournament, Lama's experience and leadership were seen as vital components of the squad.

Lama also represented France in the European Championship in 1996, where France reached the semi-finals.
